Step by Step Installation Instructions

Please perform be following steps to install Mac HIARCS 7.0 on your Macintosh computer.

  1. Create a new folder on your desktop called "HIARCS 7": From the Finder File menu select "New Folder". A new folder will appear on your desktop named "untitled folder". Rename this folder to "HIARCS 7".
  2. Open the Mac CD by double clicking on the "Mac" icon representing the Mac Hiarcs 7 CD-ROM: A window will open showing the contents (eg. folders and files) of the CD-ROM.
  3. Copy the folder "HIARCS FILES" from the "Mac" window to the "HIARCS 7" folder you created in step 1: You can do this by dragging the "HIARCS FILES" folder onto the "HIARCS 7" folder on your desktop.
  4. Open the engines folder in the "Mac" window. You will now see some chess engines with an H icon.
  5. Copy/Drag the "HIARCS 7.0 (PPC)" engine from the "Engines" folder just opened onto the "HIARCS 7" folder. If you wish you can also copy the HIARCS 6.0 engine. The 68K engines are provided for compatibility with old Macintosh computers.
  6. Optionally you can also copy the DATABASE and DOCS folders into your "HIARCS 7" folder to provide game databases and additional documentation.
  7. To use HIARCS 7.0, first open the "HIARCS 7" folder by double clicking on it. Next double click on the "HIARCS 7.0 (PPC)" engine and the HIARCS application will start opening a window called "HIARCS CHAMPIONSHIP CHESS".

Please note Mac HIARCS 7 is compatible with Mac OS X. It runs in the "Mac Classic" downward compatibility environment as a subtask, so it is really running under Mac OS 9 within the Mac OS X framework. This is all handled automatically for you - all you have to do is double click on the "HIARCS 7 (PPC)" icon once the program is installed as above.
