We will be building this section to show the rating of HIARCS 12 UCI and many of the games played by HIARCS in international tournaments. It will enable you to see the playing style and strength of the HIARCS chess engines across the years.

Chess Rating

Surprisingly, there are no rating lists which test the complete chess program (engine+book) at blitz or rapid time controls. The SSDF and Selective Search rating lists do test this at tournament time controls of 3 minutes a move but as a result these lists take some considerable time to play enough games to rate a program. The other popular internet rating lists of the CEGT and CCRL do not allow engines to use their opening books and disable any position learning capabilities which handicaps programs like HIARCS which have learning features for positions and their books.

We have started a rating list testing the top chess programs on standard hardware. This at least gives an indication of the relative strengths of these programs and there books when they are playing at full strength.

Test conditions

Hardware Used: Intel Core2 Duo (Dual Core) 2Ghz.
Both processors used for each engine, ponder is OFF
Operating System: Windows XP Pro 32 bit.
GUI used for testing: Fritz 11.
Time Control: 1st 40/4, 2nd 40/4, 3rd Game in 4 finish.
100 game match alternative colours, ponder off.
Endgame Tablebases: All 4 and most 5 piece.
Learning: Position and Book learning allowed.

Each engine uses its own engine book or designated Chessbase book and is allowed to use Chessbase book learning despite the fact many chess programs do not support their own book or book learning capabilities.

We intend to include the following engines in this rating list:

bulletDeep HIARCS 12 using the Hiarcs 12 opening book (Chessbase book learning).
bulletRybka 2.3.2a MP UCI using the RybkaII opening book (Chessbase book learning).
bulletNaum 3 UCI using the Naum Tiny (highest quality) opening book with book learning.
bulletDeep Shredder 11 using the Shredder 11 opening book (Chessbase book learning).
bulletZappa Mexico UCI using the Perfect13 opening book (Chessbase book learning).
bulletHIARCS 11.2 MP UCI using the H11Book2 opening book with HIARCS book learning.

When the list is complete we will update this page. Until then the results of Hiarcs matches so far gives an idea of the relative strength of Hiarcs 12 MP and its predecessor Hiarcs 11.2 MP:

Deep HIARCS 12 v Deep Shredder 11 57.5-42.5 (+36-21=43)
HIARCS 11.2 MP v Deep Shredder 11 44.5-55.5 (+29-40=21)

"It is exhilarating to play [HIARCS], more, a lot more than with any other strong program. It is a real pleasure to be defeated that way. Fast, lightning, unexpected death." - Fernando Villegas, April 2007
"HIARCS is much better positionally than Deep Blue." - Garry Kasparov 1997 (after game 5 of the rematch)
For Palm, PC & Mac Chess Software with attitude, features and chess playing strength, you can't beat HIARCS!
